5 Reasons Why Your AC Smells Bad

Although having AC can be nice to cool your house, it also needs some work to maintain it. One of the most common problems is a bad smell from your AC. Here are some strange scents that usually come from your AC.

1. Old cigarettes
When someone smoke inside your house, your AC may absorb the fumes. If it gets piled up, you may smell the cigarette odor as soon as you run the AC. Therefore, if your AC starts to produce the same smell as the fumes, you need to get rid of the cigarette residue on the filters.

2. Burning smell
When you smell like something is burning after you turn on the AC, there may be a problem with your compressor. Immediately call a technician the get your AC fixed.

3. Rotten garbage
You probably want to get rid immediately of this smell. This smell can be caused by a dead animal inside your AC and it is starting to decompose. It may be not dangerous for your unit, but the smell can be annoying. You need to call a technician and get it thrown away.

4. Rotten egg
If there is no sign of any rotten eggs in your home but the air on your air-conditioned room smells like there is, it may indicate a gas leak. Gas is mainly odorless, but the experts add aroma to alert people when there is a leak. Remember that inhaling this gas can be dangerous for your body. It is also explosive and flammable. So if you recognize any smell of sulfur or rotten egg, turn off your AC, open your windows, and ask for help.

5. Dirty socks
The AC guys create the term “dirty socks syndrome”. The stinky socks scent generates from water that gets trapped inside your AC. Every time you turn on your AC, this smell will kick on. You can get rid of the smell by having your AC fixed so there will be no things that block the water to drain properly.
